I know one bartender who works a dive bar. She's a relatively cute 30
something who has definitely been doing it awhile. I asked her about money
one time - she said she makes FAR more at that bar than she did anywhere else,
and that's saying something - she's got a pretty impressive resume.
What it comes down to is, your regulars will take care of you if you take care
of them. She told me her average tips were around 40% of her sales - it took
about 6-8 months for them to get that way, and for her to start drawing a
regular crowd, but every time I drive by, the parking lot is full. I'd be
surprised if she wasn't clearing $2,000 a week working her 4 shifts (assuming
she wasn't lying to me).
I doubt her story is typical, but it's at least possible to do very well.
