Hmmmm. Not wanting to usurp a certain Scottish contributor (thought you'd jump 
on this straight away Badger boy!!), as for single malts you can't go too far 
wrong with a Dalwhinnie. Take the point about Laiphroiag, but maybe a bit 
complex for a novice pallate. As for others, Chivas Regal ain't bad, nor is 
J&B-even if drinking it makes you look like you want to be like the guy from 
American Psycho!
