I have had the same problem, for many years.  I have assumed it was from all 
the Coke (caffine) in the rum&Cokes I drink.  What are you drinking?  

Perhaps the alcohol is processed faster through the body than the caffine, 
leaving you with more stimulant than depressant by the wee hours?
