"decent money" and "good money" mean different things to different people.I
don't know anyone that got rich off of bartending expect maybe the people that
own own the bars or run the bartending schools.I've been bartending for a
little over 18 years and it was always a second job for me until about a year
ago.I have never attended bartending school but feel that they are generaly
overpriced and that one can learn more working behind a bar ,reading and
talking to other bartenders. If you inquire at enough places you, have friendly
smile and willingness to work you can probably find a job as the turnover rate
in most bars is very high, due in a great part to low wages(just my
opinion). The best bartending gigs where the money is excellent the turnover is
almost nil.As a begining bartendte you can expect to make to be paid between
$4-$8 an hour or $35-$50 a shift dpending on where you are and the type of
establishment. How many hours will you have to work to cover your you
tuition? And more important will they get you a job on graduation? The other
part is tips.
If you have 100 regular customers that tip you $5 a week you will rather well
but don't expect to reach that point overnight.A good bartender should expect
to make at least $100 a night and most don't work 5 nights a week.Don't
expect that much in small neighborhood bar on a weeknight though.
Bottom line is if you want a job that is fun, hard at times but not back
breaking, you are out going and like to meet people than bartending may be for
you.If you timid or expect to get rich I think you should look somewhere else
