Subject: Do employers really check references/employment history?

I'm asking this because I just left my bartending job and I'm looking for
something better. When I applied for my last job I fibbed about my experience
at an out-of-state bar. I was almost surprised that nobody realized this
because the place is part of a large national restaurant chain and I assume
they have the HR resources to do their homework.

I worked at this restaurant for close to a year, and didn't give any notice
when I quit (I would have, but frankly I was being treated like crap and I
pretty much snapped). As I go through the job application process again, I'm
wondering how likely it is that prospective employers will even call my
previous jobs and references. I assume that my last employer never bothered.

What is your experience with this? Do you find that some managers simply don't
bother?
