While searching through some old books (using google books, of course) I came 
across this excerpt:

"Notes and Queries", by William John Thomas, 1850

Page 400:

"In the course of further evolution the gargle became a mixture of bitters, 
vermouth, and other appetisers, and finally developed into the beverage so 
highly ..."

And thats it!!! no more text!!!

Does anyone have access to the full text? Or does anyone know what is being 
referred to?
