Atleast here in Atlanta bartending shifts don't come easy. Once a bartender
gets one, it's awhile before they give it up. Most places use the bartending
position as a means of promotion. Most restaurants will only hire from within.
You usually will not be able to walk in and land a bartending job, especially
with no experience. Their best servers are usually the ones that are offered
the position. Now not saying that it will be impossible. If the establishment
has no one on staff that they think will be able to handle bartending then
obviously they will hire from the outside. But still with no experience....it
will be more difficult.
Why not start out as a server? That's where I started 10 years ago. I worked
as a server for a few months and then was offered a bar shift. One shift
quickly went to three high volume shifts, Thurs, Fri, and Sat. There's plenty
of money to be made as a server. Just be the best damn server you can and
you'll get noticed. Be sure to find a high volume or high priced establishment
to make the most tips. You can surly make over 100 a night easy. As soon as
you feel comfortable with the place your working for, let it be known to
management that your interested in a bar position. Remember to always be on
top of your game. If you can't handle the floor (server) then you can't handle
the bar. Also, PERSONALITY!!!!! Show your management team that you have alot
of it! Your drink mixing knowledge will come in time, but you need personality
from the start. Your management wants to know that you can connect directly
with people.
Hope this was helpful!
