While responding to another post, I realized that my bar has almost zero
turnover (except for cocktail waitresses, but we've pegged the reason for that
one down already). What common reasons do you see for turnover? For me, I
see:
Management attitude/issues: If management and owners aren't doing their jobs,
if they're screwing up, or if they just have the wrong attitude, I can easily
see people leaving quickly.
Money: If you're not making it, you're not staying.
Coworker issues: I could see this for establishments that have a VERY
established staff and 1 new person gets brought on. If the old staff doesn't
take to them, I can see it causing some problems in the structure.
Wrong atmosphere: If you put a high volume bartender into a low speed dive
bar, even if the money's the same, he might split for more familiar territory.
Or, more likely, if you put a bartender from a low speed beer and wine bar
into a high volume cocktail lounge or martini bar, they may find themselves
overwhelmed and gone. However, this would be a problem with hiring issues -
managers should know better.
Are there any other situations you can think of that might contribute to
turnover rate? I don't have any problems with this currently, but it might
not be a bad idea to peg down possible issues in case one of us ever does.
Problems can't be corrected if they can't be identified.
