I've been out of the country for the past two years, so I'm out of the loop as
well - it seems that the "hot" bars come and go. It's a catch 22 - The more
popular you are, the more incidents (fights, drugs, duii's etc) you'll incur
and the OLCC will put you on their list and within a couple of years you'll be
forced to shut down. I've seen that with more than a few bars.
Anyways, you'll be pretty limited in Eugene, and face more competition.
Bartending is a prime college gig, and Eugene just happens to be full of
college kids, all wanting the job, and probably know someone at the bar
personally, which will give them just enough edge to get it over you.
Obviously Portland is a much bigger city, and although it has it' own share of
colleges, the competition isn't as high.
Check out craigslist - you'll find the most recent job listings there, and
many that you won't see listed in the newspaper. Also, to get a feel for the
portland restaurant/bar job scene, check out the forums on
shamelessrestaurants.com - portland has a ton of posters. In any event,
there's enough chain restaurants in Portland that you can easily find a job if
push comes to shove.
