This is only partially true, and here's why I say that:
As a barback, you won't learn much in the way of customer interaction, pouring
(unless they put you on a service well), and you won't gain any experience
with the bangers/computer system.
However, IF, and this is a big if, IF you are a good barback, you'll get the
best work ethic. Barbacks have to work harder and more efficiently than
anyone else in the bar - all too often, they're juggling just as many
responsibilities per person as the bartenders, if not more. If you can get
the work ethic down, 90% of the rest can be taught.
