My apologies Margo, I seem to have appended my general peeve to your reply,
and that was unintentional. I was not responding to your post per se, but the
overall temper of the thread. AND what I thought was a little inconsistency,
historically speaking, regarding this board's response to this question.
Namely: When some youngster posts about bartending school and their next
step, we have poo-poo'd the efficacy of a Bar School degree and have suggested
barbacking as (one of)the best avenues for advancement. Or that it's at
least as effective as school, or cheaper, or....on and on.
Barbacking=good, school=not so good.
Now comes a damsel with the same question, and the consensus appears to be
that barbacking's too hard, that it's dead end, that you might break a nail,
that noone will really train you and you won't advance. Oh yeah, and
barbacking sucks, too.
Maybe cocktailing might be better.....
I just wanted to point out that while barbacking isn't hard, it is brutal and
that it's an exercise in attitude and fitness rather than force. The
individual feats of strength can be done, even by me, it's just the constancy
of it that takes its toll on the disinterested and un-ambitious. In Vino
Veritas' post is a better testament to that, than my hypothetical scribbling.
And the double standard. The double standard bugged the shit out of me the
most.
