Hi,
I've been lurking and reading about getting a job Bartending and wanted to see
if my plan made sense. It looks like there are 4 bartending schools in San
Diego. I plan on finding out which one is best as far as cost/curriculum.
I've read the pro/cons to going to a school but feel like it might be helpful
in my next step. My next step is to get a month or two of experience at a
local restaurant/bar where I know the owners. After this I will be going to
Japan and might be able to get another month or two experience. (Some bars in
Japan like to hire Gaijin bartenders to make their bar more interesting i.e.
having a bartender with whom people can practice their English, etc).
Hopefully at this point I will have 2-4 months experience bartending. After
that I plan on going to local bars and talking to the bar manager, submiting
resumes, etc.
1)How does this plan sound?
2)Would this be enough to avoid having to work up to bartending as a barback?
3)how long do people typically have to work as a barback to move up to being a
bartender.
I wouldn't mind working a month or two as a barback but I'm really wanting to
bartend for a combination of money and fun. I'm not exactly doing it for the
money as I have enough to minimally support myself without a job, it's just
that I would enjoy extra money, getting out and working. I'm really only going
to work for about a year then go back to school so I have a limited time frame.
Thanks,
Paul
