I think in just about everywhere in the US it's illegal not to pay you for 
worked hours - plus it's a serious insurance issue as well.

As for the bartender not sharing the tips - this is pretty normal, as has been 
stated. If he was a really nice guy, sure, he probably could have thrown you a 
few dollars - however every dollar he would have paid you would have come 
directly from his pocket, and he probably didn't ask to train you in the first 
place.

I liken the restaurant/bar biz to high school - pretty clicky at times, and 
lot's of attitude, gossip,  and intermingling.
