The problem might be not what it used to be, but what it means now. Perhaps it 
hasn't got a useful meaning anymore. In which case such an evocative name as 
Julep should be adapted to mean "with mint, crushed ice and syrup".

Yes, you can point out that a Pineapple Julep doesn't have any mint, but 
muddled fruits to my mind are best suited in something like a Cobbler, and 
perhaps berries in a Smash. 

Time for a re-evaluation of all drink catergories. Tradition has failed us in 
the past.
