

It's interesting that people talk about Julep, everyone focuses immediately on
the mint as being the essential property - whereas the word on the street is
that the original meaning of Julep is something like "syrup," from the Persian
word "gulab" which apparently means rose water. I should ask my dad about
that. Gary Regan claims that the English used julep to mean simple syrup as
far back as the 13th century. I wonder if "gomme" has a similar etymology.
Mirriam-webster doesn't even seem to have an entry for it.
