Obviously i should reply to this thread!
I feel that the Old Fashioned is one of the worlds classic drinks, it is old
skool personified, therefore it should be given the old school treatment and
that means no fruit! In Dale's UK version of The Craft of Cocktail he mentions
the whole muddled fruit thing, in the UK we like to homage to the classic
version, i.e. bourbon, sugar, bitters. That's it. We garnish with an orange
twist which gives the drink an extra dimension (although i believe that the
original was contained a lemon twist.) The Old Fashioned is exactly that, an
old fashioned cocktail. The popular theory is that it was created for retired
Col James E Pepper at the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky circa early
20th C. I don't think that these guys were muddling maraschino cherries!
I was in Chicago recently and a bartender made me an "american" old fashioned
i.e. fruit and all. I made him the UK version and we both agreed that mine was
better! But, as always, each to their own. Just don't serve me the fruited
version! And, if you put soda in it........ you and me are stepping outside!
Happy Hols.
