Basic beer questions

Sorry if these are really basic and boring questions, but...I work in a
brewery, but I am pretty clueless about types of beer. It's usually very busy,
no time to be asking the bartenders questions, and they don't really seem to
think I need to know about this stuff anyway. But I need help, so I don't
sound completely dumb when customers ask me questions about the beers.
What does "IPA" stand for?
What's the difference between a lager and and ale?
What's up with 'cask' beer? For instance, if we serve a stout from the tap as
well as the cask, how is it much different? Why would someone be interested in
the cask version rather than the tap?
