Pebbles,
I have read the rest of the posters remarks and see that you have been given
quite a lot of good advice, some with judgement and some without.
One thing you must learn is that a bartender is constanly on the spot and must
have a thick skin, taking the good with the bad. As this is a forum for
bartenders, we tend not to hold back in our posts for the most part, thus we
do insult the sensibilities of many a green bartender, sometimes turning them
from the profession altogether. Please read these posts as a third party and
take your self away from them. I agree that there are a lot of negative
remarks, however, they are honest.
No one here will have a fullproof answer on how to get a job, only
suggestions, you may pick and choose which ones you wish to use.
Bartending is not easy. It is aggrivating, thankless, smelly and wet.
Sometimes you will run your ass off for nothing, and sometimes you will be
standing around twiddling your thumbs for nothing. I wish people would quit
purporting the beleif that a bartender always has a good time and always makes
great money - this is not the case. Bartending is not singularly about being
a people person or knowing a number of recipies. Much like your chosen
career, it is about taking care of people, and I think you will do fine at it,
as long as you let go of the illusions of fourune and popularity.
Please take the time to delve into these forums and read the posts, they will
give you the insight that your teachers at bartending school were unable to
give you. Also take the time to start frequenting bars and watching what goes
on. I would not trust a nurse that didn't frequent hospitals - a bartender
that does not frequent bars is much the same.
Best of luck to you in your job search.
