Wow! Apparently PA has a rush of new bartenders today. (there's another one
in "behind the bar")My personal advice: bartending school is not neccessary.
In my experience, it's not normally gonna help you break into the business.
There are people that have had a good experience with school's but it seems
that there are a lot more that find it unneccessary. The bar that I work at
WILL NOT hire someone that has been through bartending school. It's the
owners pet peeve. She'd rather spend the time and money to train a new person
herself. I agree with this philosophy because you get to make sure your
bartenders do it your way, and not some mixture of your way and someone else's
way.
Another thing to be aware of is that it is very hard to find a bartending job
with no bar or foodservice experience. Most places you must start as a
waitperson or barback for a period of time before they will start you
bartending.
Your best bet is to go to the places you would like to work and see what they
would want. If your favorite place wants bartending school, turn in an app
and start the school ASAP. If the class is only 2 weeks long it'll probably
take about as long as the hiring process. Besides, you can always go to
school and not put it on an application. This way, you'd just look like a
quick lerner. Just be open to the differences between what the school tells
you, and what the bar actually wants.
