I believe if you're seeking out the original recipe for the Shirley temple, 
then 7-up was used. I believe the ginger ale was substituted as the recipe 
became popular around the world, and some of the countries simply didn't have 
lemon-lime soda to substitute. Just do some searching for "Shirley temple" and 
"Chasen's" (which is where the recipe was invented) and you'll see that 
generally 7-up is referred to.
