For George Courtney:
How can you have Rob Roy without the Manhattan? ;)

For Georgie63:
If you want to learn a lot of drinks fast... get Gary Regan's The Joy of
Mixology. It shows you the relationship between a lot of different cocktails
by putting them into families. What this means is that once you learn what
makes up the family you can make a hell of a lot drinks by just learning the
modifers.

Ground yourself in the fundamental cocktails and learn the modifiers that get
you to the standard drinks of today.

Good luck!
