Jen,
You're referring to a "Tequila Popper." You fill the shot glass about 3/4 of
the way with tequila (or another spirit, but usually tequila), then pour soda
(ginger ale or other) on top. Cover it with your hand or whatever, tap the
glass fairly hard on the bar (making sure that hte bottom is perpendicular to
the bar or else it will break), then shoot it.
