It sounds possible.  At the end of the affair, the host or whomever
may give gratuity to the head of banquets (or whomever ran that event
for the night)for the staff to split up, and you will get a piece of that, 
making up for not getting regular tips like you would at the regular hotel 
bar. Of course, you may get an occassional tip thrown your way anyway, so that 
can help your wallet a bit too. I used to work at a hotel bar, made min.wage
plus my tips and getting tipped out from restaurant staff and cocktail servers.
So it was a fairly lucrative gig....
