Congrats! It is hard work, but it's a great job. The best advice I can give is
stay busy, there is almost always something that needs to be done. When I
bar-backed (and I still do sometimes) I always liked to think of it as putting
out fires before they even started. I am sure most bars have different
expectations of their bar-backs. But here, they stock beer, keep juices full,
keep coolers full, keep ice filled, clear tables (we don't have cocktail
waitresses), replace empty liquor bottles, swap out kegs, and a lot of other
miscellaneous things that come up.
As a bar manager, when I hire a new bar-back, I always try to put them with a
bartender that I trust to teach them the right way to do things. There is
nothing worse than someone learning bad habits from the get-go. Hopefully the
person that hired you does the same thing.
Just try and be as aware as possible the whole time. The first few days will
be a little crazy, especially if you haven't got experience. But once you get
in the groove, it's generally smooth.
Again, congrats on the job.
