I went from tending to sales and I couldn't wait to get back behind the stick.
Don't get me wrong, on premise sales can be rewarding, but I found that I
traded stress for pressure. Sure, you work Monday-Friday, with weekends and
most holidays off and you can live a near normal life. The trade-off is that
you work Monday-Friday with weekends and most holidays off and live a near
normal life. It gets hairy behind the bar when you're slammed, but in sales,
you're always slammed because you've got to make "those numbers". I could
never relax on my off time because I always thought I should be OUT, at least
spending some money in my accounts. The size/type of distibutor you work for
also makes a ton of difference.
My suggestion is to talk to the wine/beer/liquor reps who handle the account
where you work and let them get to know you. Usually sales jobs in the
industry are not announced and when an opening does become available, they're
filled by people the distributor already knows--whether it's salesmen from a
competitor, or someone they know as a customer who wants to make the leap.
