I dont advocate schools either. I will say the same thing to you as I say to
every other customer who comes in with dreams of bartending. Bartending
school and other schooling is quite similar in a lot of ways. In other
professions, employers want you to have experience. In bars they definetly
want you to have experience. Any fool with a bottle of Vodka can learn to
mix drinks. Now weather you can mix those drinks in a bar full of people all
calling you, waving there money in the air, in a timely manner (ie, before
they get so pissed that they leave because they have been waiting there turn
for 10 minutes).
Bartending school to me....unneccessary. Now if you ask someone who got a job
after going to bartending school, you'll get a different answer. Being on
the hiring end?? My boss never hires anyone fresh out of bartending school.
Why?? No experience. When 200 (or even just 20)people walk in they start to
panic and forget how to make those drinks, especially if youve never actually
made drinks in a live bar. There are times where you can have a bar with just
15 people in there and it gets you sweating, they all seem to want there
drinks at the same time.
My suggestion, start at a small hole in the wall bar until you feel
comfortable. Then move up slowly. Bartending school was someones excuse to
make a lot of money teaching people how to do a four count and pouring
ingredients.
