One of the best ways around this quandry that I have found is to ask them 
"Would you like for me to take any of these/those empties out of your way?"
That gives them the feeling that your'e not rushing them , and you can get 
stuff cleaned up, plus, you actualy talk to the coustomer and give them the 
oportunity to order something more.  Example converstation"

"How is everying?  Fine? Good!  May I take anything out of the way here, we 
seem to have no room for elbows on the table (cheezy attempt at humor)?"

"Sure, take these empties away, oh, and can we have a round of Irish coffee?"

"Certianly, I'll be right back" Clear empties, dump ashtray, remove torn up 
cocktail napkins etc......


So really, just ask!!!  It seems to work for me.
