I always use a heavy rolling pin when muddling citrus fruit. 

I use a carved, brazilian muddler when muddling herbs, or soft fruit - I just 
think these should be treated gentler, with the flavours teased out - kinda 
like foreplay, if ewe will.

I have never been inclined to muddle anything with ice. Why would anybody do 
this? It seems quite silly.
