I think the confusion comes from Dale de Groff.

Many people have given him credit for creating the cosmopolitan, but he 
himself will not accept the credit.  Although, it is his version of the cosmo, 
that was popularised.  In many of his recipes, he uses a lemon flavoured vodka 
and sometimes, states Absolut citron, which is probably why the sales rep 
claims its the original recipe.

OK that's my theory and otherwise - its a really good sales pitch from (and 
for) Absolut
