Subject: Origin of modern cocktails

I was watching the History channel today and they had an interesting special
on prohibition. They said that during prohibition bartenders would mix in
fruit juice and other brightly colored/strong tasting fruit juices to mask the
fact that most home-made alcohol at the time was filled with poisonous
chemicals and tasted horrid. That makes sense to me (we still use mixers to
hide the taste of bad booze).I was wondering if that was true. I know before
that they would use soda, tonic, etc., but is this the origin of modern day
cocktails? Also, that would be a strictly American thing, so did it happen in
other countries at about the same time? Anyway, if anyone knows anything I
would sure like to hear it!
