Bravo Devon!
Drink what you like!! The entire mystique of combining red wine with red meat
and white wine with white was a marketing ploy conjred in the the 50's to get
Americans to drink more wine.
Noone can tell anohter individual what should pair well with a certain food.
The only thing you can suggest is how the wine (maybe beer) will "effect" the
meal. To avoid my diatribe, I simply suggest the following.
Buy a bottle of red wine (varietal doesn't matter)
Buy a grape, a lemon, some gorgazola cheese and a jalapeno.
Sip the wine before and after a bite of each.
This little test will help you understand how wine will effect the overall
experience of a meal. It's a useful tool, but never overgeneralize the
subject. No wine perfectly matches a meal.
Try it with certain cocktails as well. Taste is only a combination of four
senstaions (bitter, salty, sweet and sour). The overall flavor, however comes
from the nose. I don't know of any cocktail that can accomplisht this
feat...Scotch or Bourbon maybe... but never tried it.
