Choosing a career as a bartender is really no different from any other career
that would involve night and weekend work. However, if your spouse works
daytime and you work nights, then there is the issue of not spending a lot of
time together, and of course, no going out to dinner on Friday or Saturday
nights! If you've got a good gig and are making a lot of money, you'll find a
way to balance it all out. The only pitfall is when you start a
family......hard to come home at night and have the new baby keep you up,
especially if you're responsible for caring for the baby during the day. And
make sure you don't hook up with someone that is extremely jealous. Your job
is to talk to the customers, be friendly, flirt, etc. and this will never work
if your spouse is the jealous type (plus you don't want them hanging out
watching you all night either).
I've been tending off and on for over 20 years. Somehow, I've managed to
raise 3 kids and am getting ready to celebrate my 21st anniversary. Once the
kids were into their teens, my hubby actually started moonlighting weekend
nights at the club as a doorman/bouncer so we could see each other. It worked
out great and he had some extra spending $$$ in his pocket.
So yeah, it can definitely work!
Good Luck!
