I totally agree with Flash! Don't ever hit them on a weekend! And don't
call on the phone.......my theory is if you're really serious about wanting a
job, take the time to show up in person. It's easy to sit there and dial the
phone, but taking the time to come in goes a long way with me (I won't take
calls on the phone regarding employment).
Flash is right about going in and having a cocktail. Observe the working
conditions, the other employees, the customers, etc. Even though you may
think it's a cool place, a closer look may tell you otherwise. A lot of bars
don't actually employ barbacks, so you may have to be willing to find a
position that is part tending/part serving (even though I know you really
don't want to serve). The hardest part is just getting your foot in the door.
I've actually gone to an interview, letting them know up front that I was a
bartender and was interested strictly in a bar position. But I also let them
know I would be willing to come onboard in another capacity with the
understanding that if a bar position came open, that I would be considered
first. This has worked for me, and the longest I waited for a bar position
was about 6 months.
Anyway, this is the right time to start looking. Hit the street, resume in
hand and apply everywhere you think you might enjoy working. And don't let it
end there! Follow up every few weeks/month. A phone call will do.....Hi, this
is Hank. We spoke last month and I was just wondering if anything has come
available....blah, blah, blah......They'll either get tired of hearing from
you and hire you, or they'll start ducking your phone calls. Either way, it's
a way of keeping your name fresh in their minds.
If you were in my area, hell, I'd hire you! God knows, I need a good
barback/fill-in bartender!
