Subject: the highball question

This term "highball" has confused me for the longest time. I never did the
whole bartending school thing so I'm afraid I've missed some key terminology.
Is "highball" a general term for a basic drink recipe with many variations,
like martini, collins, etc.? Or will someone come in and ask for a highball,
and I'm supposed to know exactly what they want? My pocket guide says it is 2
oz. whiskey, fill with soda water or ginger ale. However, I've heard the term
used in discussing drinks in general, so which is it? And is there a contrast
to a highball, like a lowball? ??? Thanks!
