I've always used the 28oz shaker tin, which is the industry standard. 

Creating recipes where you add the alcohol ingredient then simply "fill" the 
rest only works when you're dealing with drinks that are built on ice. 
Otherwise you either need to know how much of the mixer to use either by 
measurement, or visually.
