what i understood was a half and half was half stout, half lager, i.e. Guiness 
and Harp. Since Bass is an ale, mixing it with guiness is not really a "half 
and half," i guess, more like a one and one. i dunno.
both fosters and heinekens are pilsners, i've never tried mixing them with 
stouts. 
i think ordering a "black and tan" in a pub in the UK exposes the american as 
being a tourist, so i'm avoiding it at all costs when i go to ireland this 
summer.
