There are a lot of stories on that one.  I know of about five different 
stories I've heard about the beginning of the margarita.   But this is the 
only one I can think of right now.
Margarita Sames mixed it first.  Her two favorite spirits were Cointreau and 
Tequila, so she mixed them together. This all happened in 1948.  Supposedly it 
got its name from the fact that her husband served it to her in a glass with 
her name etched into it.  
Actually, one of the other ones is that it was first mixed at Bertita's bar 
in Mexico.  That was supposedly around the 1930s.
