I suggest you read the thread about bartending schools a few threads down, in
particular the exchange between "aging bacchus" (me) and swizzlestick (teacher
at a bartending school).
The Professional Bartending School with a branch in Schaumburg and Oakbrook
(Lombard) is the one I have the most first hand knowledge of. In fact, my
story about the tuition comes from my experience at the branch in Oakbrook. (I
worked across the street from the place for 10 years - they used to send their
students over to observe. (read - observe - not to tip)
Swizzlestick is right on the money with his suggestions, however, not giving
you tuition rates is a HUGE red flag. Get a job as a server - wait 3-6 months
and move up (or over - I have no beefs with my comrades who prefer to serve
than bartend.) There are many legit bartending schools out there, but I will
say again, I have never met anyone who got a job solely because they went to
school.
Help me with this one swizzle - your comments will probably carry a lot of
weight.
Oh yes, someone above asked about "certification" - not sure what you mean in
Chicago. Many cities and counties require "basset" training (Beverage Alcohol
Sellers and Servers Education and Training) usually taught by off-duty cops. I
know of no other "certification" required by any Chicago-area county.
