Goes to prove, "ya never know." Thanks for your story.
I got one job because the GM and I shared the same worthless liberal arts MA.
However, at the same company, my direct supervisor resented my continued
education and called me "college boy" (despite me being in my 30s)the whole
time he was there.
I was hired at the Hard Rock cafe for telling a good joke to one of the
trainers at their "cattle call."
I got one bartending spot after accepting a position as barback. Only took 3
months to move up.
I got one position after working as a corporate trainer in the kitchen. My
regional VP said, "we can't pay you any more money to work in the kitchen, you
either have to go into management or work for tips." I said "make me a
bartender."
All I can say is that after 25 years in the biz, I've never needed a resume
and more often than not, getting hired is more a matter of timing, luck, first
impressions, experience, and "who you know." That you had success using a
resume merely underscores what a diverse business this can be. As I try to
explain to my old friends with "real jobs," - think of the industry as being
like retail on steroids.
I will revise my previous post - a resume? "well, it couldn't hurt."
