I apologize if you think this is "uncaring" but i'm not sure your boss 
actually did anything wrong.  As a bar owner, his job is to sell drinks, he is 
not your friends social worker or part of his AA group.  I'm not sure you as a 
bar tender are in a position to tell your boss who he can and cannot sell beer 
to.  You say your friend had it coming when he was fired so i don't believe 
his personal life and how many kids he has should be an issue.  He was late, 
he was fired, end of story.  Would you employ someone you considered 
unreliable because they had kids?  I wouldn't.  As for how to handle your boss 
if he "behaves" like that again (What? Runs his business?) I suggest if you 
don't like how he does things, leave.

PS. Although i don't have first hand experience of this, i thought AA and 
similar organisations were based on the adict choosing to manage their 
addiction, not have it enforced by friends, bosses etc.
