:) Love it!
I think we agree that they should keep out unless invited. Some of them (as
mentioned here) may take it personally or grumble about the 'tenders being
elitist - I remember feeling that way when I first started all those years
ago. Yet once the bar has some speed and flow up, a wandering waiter is indeed
a calamity!
If the policy doesn't forbid it (it should) then a couple of 'accidental'
spills and a crate dropped on a foot may help.
Depending on the place, a waiter/runner/busboy may include barbackduties, and
so the line gets a little blurred.
It's horrid when a dedicated barback is off, and we have to pull someone from
the floor. Restocking the beers doesn't seem like such a hard job - until you
see someone getting it so wrong and getting in the way at the same time!
It makes us really appreciate the good ones!
They are the ones that have started growing the eyes in the back of the head
(an essential mutation in all true 'tenders').
And then, sometimes the dolts, because they've been behind once, take it upon
themselves to think they can now do it any time! Kill, kill killl...
As discussed here, it helps everyone if the stations are set up in such a way
that they can do almost everything they need without 'crossing the line' -
literally.
