Another faker here...I got my first gig at a pretty busy place because I had
someone I knew vouch for me -- a friend who was a 'tender at another bar. He
basicall said "F--k it. I have nothing to lose. If you suck and they fire you,
it doesn't matter to me, because we have nothing to do with that bar." I
actually managed to fake it pretty well, but one trick I learned with the soda
gun was to cup your hand in front of it when you're topping off a glass that's
full of ice -- that way, the person directly in front of you won't get an
unwanted shower. Faking it is just not THAT hard, but it depends on the place.
I got lucky, because I worked at a joint where all I had to do was mix and
pour drinks, bulls--t with the customers and clean up. When it comes to stuff
like telling a manager that you know how to change a keg, or a CO2 tank, or
something like that, you're screwed unless you've done it before. Fortunately,
I've never had to do it, although I made sure to learn how. If you have half a
brain and know how to make about 50 of the most popular drinks, AND pull a
draft beer tap, you'll be fine. It's just NOT that hard.
