I agree with Hal. There are courses in New Orleans for $350 or so, but they're 
hardly necessary. My initial expenses were: $15 for the responsible alcohol 
server card, including a two-hour class (legally required in many states), 
plus $105 for a manager's license, which many states require if you are going 
to be alone in the bar. Some places will help out with the manager's license; 
I wouldn't bother getting one unless you're already hired and your boss says 
you need one.
Other, hidden expenses included new shoes and comfortable insoles, the latter 
costing $20 for good ones. Expect to ruin some clothes, too- takes a while to 
learn where the bleach sits.
If you can't get a job tending at first, try starting out as a barback. 
They're more likely to be hired with no experience. Or at least claim to have 
had some experience waiting tables or something.
