Basically your champagne can only come from the champagne region in france
therefore is the most exclusive catagory of sparkler thus the price, however
the method used is copied all over the world very successfully such as in
Spain where very high quality cava is produced, Australia makes some great
stuff using the same grapes and also in SA I know of a fantastic Brut named
Simonsig, all of these and many more compare very favourably with champagne
however they can't call themselves champagne and thus are never going to be
quite so popular, something about the name conjures up an image of celebration
and opulence, Some of the cheaper champagnes are of far lower quality than a
really good sparkling wine but will always sell just by carrying the name
which is a bit sad really but what can you do??? Personally i'd much rather
have three good bottles of a sparkling wine than one reasonable one of
champagne for the same price, good luck just keep an eye out for the ones who
add the fizz using co2 they tend to be cheap and a bit nasty. Spumante and
asti can differ in quality very widely it depends on your taste generally the
more expensive the better.
