While some may argue that this is ridiculous, in my opinion, there IS a 
difference...

to stir a drink means literally, to stir it.  Alot of places that I've been to 
will stir it by jabbing a bar spoon into the ice and liquor, thereby chipping 
ice, diluting liquor and bruising the liquor in the process... much like 
shaking does.  Stirring a drink reduces the amount of water that dilutes the 
liquor but still effectively chills it...

The technique I learned was to stir a drink so that the back of the bar spoon 
remains in contact with the side of the glass...  shrug
