Some of you more serious cocktail explorers know me. Those who don't, well hi
there, I'm Dr. Cocktail, a cocktail historian.
Remember old cocktail guides often calling for orange bitters in their
cocktail recipes? Did you know there is a company that still makes them? Fee
Bros. in Rochester, N.Y. You can order them and reproduce many vintage drinks
- as well as create great new ones. Their number is: 1-800-961-3337
Now, many of you will NOT know that some years ago I also influenced them to
make Peach Bitters. Peach bitters had not been made in almost 70 years before
Fee started making them again. Problem was (and is) in the pantheon of
American cocktails, there were only about 9 drinks that ever called for it!!
I just concluded some extensive research on drinks with peach bitters a) from
OTHER countries and b) on the internet and of new creation. We now have about
20 drinks altogether.
There is a company in England that also saw the need and began having orange &
peach bitters produced again. They have just discontinued peach bitters for
lack of demand.
I'm here to tell you that peach bitters are FANTASTIC and I propose the
following:
If you serious cocktail enthusiasts out there will order a little bottle of
peach bitters from Fee's, I will invite you to invent some cocktail recipes
which use it. You can send the recipes to me at drcocktail[at]cocktailspa.com and
I will forward all of the usable recipes (with the creator's name attached if
they so desire) to both companies and I will post all these recipes on the web
as well.
Now, this is not a contest. All recipes (unless they already exist or are just
plain awful) will be included. If you attach your name and your drink becomes
popular you will have assured your place in cocktail history. If not, you'll
have had a little creative fun and help assure that a valuable cocktail
ingredient does not go extinct.
The rules are simple: Don't make up a recipe without having a bottle of peach
bitters to test in it. Try to be original. Give the drink a name. If the
drink's name is obscene, I'll toss the recipe.
There it is. This invitation is open to all. Again, recipes should be sent to:
drcocktail[at]cocktailspa.com
Good Luck! --Doc.
