Hello all,
Well it has finally happened to me. I have been laid off from a decent paying
job due to the unstable economic times here in San Diego. My name is Jason and
I have been in the realm of manufacturing for that past 15 years and I think
it is time for a change...
I have been lurking on this forum for a few days and have gained great insight
into the world of bartending..I fear, however, that I may be too old or
inexperienced to even consider this career. I really love being with people in
a social environment which is probably the reason I have hated working at
manufacturing plants for so long...
Well anyway, I am looking to gain some insight on getting my foot in the door
and was curious if someone could elaborate on the responsibilities of a
barback..I have never worked in the hospitality industry so this is all new to
me.. I imagine a barback would take drink orders, serve drinks, clean tables,
wash glasses, and help the bartender with various other bar chores. Does this
sound correct?
Bartending school...well I read a post by a gentleman here that really hit
home. He stated he attended a school so that he would be better equiped to
move into a bartender position while barbacking..Very thoughtful I must say..
Looking through the local paper here in San Diego hasn't brought to many
prospects so I imagine the "on foot" system of resume distribution is going to
be my best bet...
I can hear it now while they look over my resume...."hmmm...production manager
for so and so...hmmm...experience with rf and tig welding...hmmm...." Grrrr,
maybe this is why I have stayed in the same field for so long, because I HATE
INTERVIEWS!!! But hey change is good and I am ready for it...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated...I apologize if this has been asked a
hundred times but I have read some older posts and didn't find what I was
looking for but I will keep searching...
Thanks in advance,
Jason
