rather than focus on bartending books, try buying an assortment of books on
particular spirits.
tequila:
The book of Tequila - A complete guide, by Bob Emmons
ISBN:0-81269352-3
Bourbon:
The Book of Classic American Whiskeys, by Mark H. Waymack & James F. Harris
ISBN: 0-8126-9306-x
the above two books explain distillation and aging, which is great if you want
to understand the spirits (any spirit) that you are selling.
As for buying books of recipes, the schumann book is a good one to purchase (I
don't even have a copy myself, shame on me) it is highly recommended by the
bartenders I have worked with.
The more books you get, the more differing recipes you accumulate. It is
better to try and emulate what the original recipe is trying to taste like (if
that makes sense?)
George!
