Here's what I recommend - of course you can add or subtract items as you see
fit.

SPIRITS
(1 750 ml bottle each - it's not necessary to get the premium stuff)

Vodka
Gin
Rum (white)
Tequila
Bourbon
Blended Scotch (I'd recommend White Horse - good for its price)
Canadian Whisky (can be used in place of blended American whiskey in recipes)
Brandy (for example, E&J)

LIQUEURS
(Get smaller bottles at first - if you find you use them a lot, get bigger
bottles next time)

Triple Sec (750 ml bottle recommended - this is used a lot)
Kahlua
Bailey's Irish Cream
Amaretto
Creme de menthe
Creme de cacao
Peach Schnapps
Peppermint Schnapps
Midori
Any other liqueur found in recipes that you or your friends like (e.g.
Galliano, Frangelico, Benedictine, Drambuie, Anisette, Southern Comfort,
Jagermeister, etc.)

OTHER BOOZE

Dry vermouth
Sweet vermouth
Cherry brandy
Sparkling wine or champagne (in small bottles, so you don't waste a large
bottle on one champagne cocktail)

MIXERS and CONDIMENTS

Sour mix
Club soda (in 10-oz bottles)
Tonic water (in 10-oz bottles)
Ginger Ale (in 10-oz bottles)
Sprite or 7-UP
Cola
Cream of Coconut (Coco Lopez comes in small cans)
Grenadine
Rose's Lime Juice
Angostura bitters
Margarita salt
Sugar or Simple Syrup
Worscestershire sauce, Tabasco Sauce, celery salt, salt &
   pepper for Bloody Marys
Cream (Half-and-Half when the recipe calls for light cream,
Whipping Cream when the recipe calls for heavy cream -
   buy only when needed)
Juices (orange, lemon, lime, cranberry, pineapple, grapefruit, tomato)
Maraschino cherries and martini olives
Plenty of fresh ice
