Generaly I believe the fault of the whole problem is to blame on the
schools for all the propoganda they throw at you. Have you ever seen a
commercial for a "Bartending School"? They start off by saying you can
"become" a bartender in just 2 weeks. Then they go on by having testemonials
from people claiming to make up to $400.00 in one night. This kind of
advertisement isn't entirely false, but they fail to mention alot of things.
They all talk about job placement, which IMO is worthless. The whole time
your in class all they do is hype you up by acting like your gonna be working
the day you get your certificate. So in a sense you can't really blame people
for thinking that they could be bartenders straight outta school because
that's all that is put in their heads for 2 weeks. I went to a school and I
must admit that is the way I thought at first, but after many interviews I
learned that my supposed "education" isn't as valuable as I thought. The way
that managers should look at a possible bartender who only has experience
through the school
is like this: This person went out and spent a good deal of money to become
something. If he/she is really passionate about becoming a bartender than
they shouldn't mind barbacking (or something similar) for a little while.
Going to school (even if you have to barback) is still a faster track than
working through the resturaunt ranks. We all started with no experience at
one point and everyone was given a chance by someone at somepoint. We
shouldn't forget that.
